Cardinals Injury Alert: Yadier Molina out 8-12 weeks with thumb injury

By on 7/10/2014 03:30:00 PM

UPDATE: Rob Rains of reports that Mozeliak confirmed Molina will miss 8-12 weeks with torn ligaments in his right thumb. Molina will have surgery to repair the injury.
The news is devastating for the Cardinals, who will now have to hope Molina progresses well and is able to return by the end of the regular season. Catcher Audry Perez was recalled from Triple-A Memphis in the corresponding roster move.

ORIGINAL: St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak has called a press conference regarding All-Star catcher Yadier Molina's thumb injury, reports Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.  No other details are currently available, although the speculation is the injury could be serious.

Molina exited St. Louis’ win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night in the third inning with a right thumb sprain. He suffered the injury sliding into third base, a common injury around the league this season.

He underwent an MRI on the injured thumb, the results of which will presumably be disclosed at the press conference today.

Trailing the Milwaukee Brewers by two games in the NL Central, the Cardinals obviously can’t afford to lose Molina for an extended period of time. Molina has been one of the most valuable players in the league for the past several years, posting 2.5 WAR so far in 2014.

Tony Cruz, who owns a .639 OPS in 21 games this year, replaced Molina on Wednesday night. The Cardinals might have to scan the waiver wire should Molina be placed on the disabled list.
