Cardinals Injury Update: Tyrann Mathieu 6-8 weeks from playing

The Arizona Cardinals second year safety, Tyrann Mathieu, is still recovering from tearing both his anterior and lateral collateral ligaments in his left knee last season. Mike Jurecki tweeted yesterday that Mathieu is still 6-8 weeks away from his return. He was placed on the physically unable to perform list to start camp.

Mathieu is coming off an impresive rookie season with 68 tackles and proved he was a steal for the Cardinals in the 2013 NFL Draft. Mathieu tore his ACL in a win against the St. Louis Rams in 2013. His plan is to return to the team around week 5.

"I would hope," Mathieu said. "Still puts me right around the bye. That's ultimately what I'm pushing for."

In a secondary that includes one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL in Patrick Peterson, the Cardinals need Mathieu back as soon as he's 100 percent, for them to compete in one of the NFL's toughest divisions.
