Ironically, Ballard was working his way back onto the field after losing most of his 2013 season to a torn ACL. His latest injury occurred after catching a pass at practice. He fell to the turf and had to be helped off the field.
Further tests will be needed to confirm the diagnosis, but if surgery is required, Ballard will most likely be lost for the season. He was expected to have a significant role in a backfield that includes Trent Richardson and Ahmad Bradshaw.
The Colts open their season Sunday September 7th in Denver against the Broncos.
