Cowboys Injury Update: DeMarcus Lawrence breaks foot, out 8-12 weeks

By on 7/30/2014 09:15:00 AM

The Dallas Cowboys suffered yet another setback in their defense yesterday afternoon when rookie defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence was carted off the field with a foot injury.  Late last night, David Helman from reported that Lawrence suffered a broken foot and would be out for at least 8-12 weeks.

The Cowboys defense was ranked dead last in the 2013 NFL season and are now struggling with continuous injury issues throughout this offseason.  Last evening, Lawrence went down to the ground and grabbed his right foot during a drill against left tackle Tyron Smith, and had to be carted off the field.

As Lawrence was assisted by trainers, social media exploded with news about the fallen rookie:
A local television even showed a video of Lawrence's injury on Twitter:

Lawrence was Dallas' second-round draft pick in this past 2014 NFL Draft in May.  The Cowboys traded up in the draft to get Lawrence, who had been expected to fill the Cowboys’ void at defensive end after DeMarcus Ware went to the Denver Broncos.  Hailing from Boise State University, Lawrence racked up 120 combined tackles, 34 sacks, seven forced fumbles and one interception in two seasons played.

The Cowboys are still reeling from losing Sean Lee for the season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), not to mention losing defensive lineman Jason Hatcher in free agency in addition to Ware.

Reporters asked Dallas' owner Jerry Jones if he was concerned:
I want to see the X-ray. But the answer would be yes. Hopefully, it will be OK
The Cowboys are already struggling to find pass rushers, and were hoping that Lawrence can make a big impact this season at defensive end. This setback will indeed hurt Dallas' depth, as Lawrence has the versatility to play both inside and outside on the defensive line.

The worst case scenario for the Cowboys would be if Lawrence ends up missing the full 12 weeks.  If that were to happen, their 34th overall pick in the draft would be able to return in Week 8, when the 2014 NFL season is halfway over.
