Cubs Injury Update: Emilio Bonifacio rehab result

By on 7/13/2014 10:00:00 AM

The Chicago Cubs lost to the Atlanta Braves in the second of a three game series on Saturday by the score of 11-6. The loss dropped the last-place Cubs to 40-53 on the season. Although scoring six runs, the Cubs are still near the bottom of the league in runs scored. Hoping to bring a spark to the offense in the second half of the season is outfielder Emilio Bonifacio, who took another step in his recovery from an oblique strain by starting a rehab assignment.

Our own Raymond Bureau reported on June 14 that  Bonifacio injured his rib cage area while swinging at a pitch in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 12. He was placed on the disabled list and an MRI revealed an oblique strain.

An update on Bonifacio, as reported by R.J. White of, is that he began a rehab assignment with Mesa of the Rookie League. He went 3-for-4.  There is currently no timetable for his return to the Cubs.

Bonifacio, in his eighth Major League season, is batting .261 with a home run, 16 RBI and 13 stolen bases this season. The veteran has played for the Diamondbacks, Nationals, Marlins, Royals, Blue Jays and Cubs and has a career batting average of .262 with 11 home runs, 147 RBI and 151 stolen bases.
