Cubs Injury Update: Emilio Bonifacio moves rehab to Double-A Tennessee

By on 7/17/2014 09:30:00 AM

The Chicago Cubs promoted center fielder/second baseman and lead-off hitter Emilio Bonifacio to Double-A Tennessee on July 16 to continue his Minor League rehab assignment. He had a rough night at the plate, going 0 for 4 with a strikeout, but he is getting closer to returning to the Cubs. Bonifacio went on the disabled list on July 13 with a right oblique strain.

Bonifacio injured himself while swinging during his first at bat on June 12 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He grounded to shortstop but dropped to the ground immediately and needed help off the field.

The switch-hitting Bonifacio started his assignment on July 11 and is now 3 for 14 in four games. He was hitting .261 with 1 HR, 16 RBI, 29 runs scored, and 13 stolen bases as the Cubs' primary lead-off hitter at the time his injury. There is still no timetable set for his return, but the fact that he is getting more playing time and at bats is a very good sign.
