Cubs Injury Update: Emilio Bonifacio activated, Darwin Barney DFA

By on 7/22/2014 04:30:00 PM

The Chicago Cubs have activated second baseman/center fielder Emilio Bonifacio from the disabled list and, to make room for him, designated second baseman Darwin Barney for assignment. Barney's DFA answers the question of what the Cubs will do with Arismendy Alcantara when Bonifacio returns.'s Cubs beat writer Carrie Muskat announced the news Tuesday afternoon.
Muskat also posted tonight's starting lineup showing Bonifacio leading off and playing second base with Alcantara batting second and playing center field.

Bonifacio is coming off the disabled list after missing approximately six weeks with a strained right oblique. He swung at a pitch on June 12 and immediately dropped to the ground. He completed a seven-game Minor League rehab assignment this past week in which he went 7 for 26. On the season, Bonifacio is hitting .261 with 1 HR, 16 RBI, 13 stolen bases, and 29 runs scored in 61 games as the Cubs' primary lead-off hitter.

The designation of Barney allows Bonifacio to move back to the infield, where the 29-year-old can save his legs for the base paths. It also allows Alcantara to stay on the Major League roster, where he has flourished in his first opportunity. Alcantara is hitting .286 with 1 HR and 6 RBI in 8 games. He came up when Barney went on paternity leave on July 9 and played his way into an apparently permanent starting role.

Barney is a 2012 gold-glove winner, but his production has diminished each year since 2011. He brought it back up from .208 last year to .230 this year.
