Cubs Injury Update: Neil Ramirez to DL

By on 7/30/2014 07:30:00 AM

The Chicago Cubs entered Tuesday night's game in last place in the National League Central with a record of 43-61. At 27th in the Major Leagues in runs scored and 19th in ERA, the Cubs have struggled in most phases of the game this season. One bright spot has been the emergence of rookie pitcher Neil Ramirez, who has been dominant out of the bullpen. The bad news is that Ramirez is heading to the disabled list.

Matthew Pouliot, executive editor at, tweeted the following update on Ramirez.
The Cubs are currently going with a bullpen of Pedro Strop, James Russell, Wesley Wright, Justin Grimm and Carlos Villanueva behind closer Hector Rondon. It's uncertain whether or not the Cubs will add another pitcher to the bullpen with Ramirez out.

Ramirez was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the first round in 2007.  In seven Minor League seasons, he complied a record of 36-35 with a 4.40 ERA. Ramirez, a 25-year old rookie, is 1-1 with a miniscule 0.96 ERA. In 28 innings, he's allowed only 16 hits, three earned runs, 10 walks and struck out 36.
