Diamondbacks Injury Update: Brad Ziegler unavailable after being hit by line drive

By on 7/24/2014 01:00:00 PM

The Arizona Diamondbacks enter a weekend series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday coming off an 11-5 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday. The loss dropped the Diamondbacks to 44-58, fourth in the National League West. A big problem this season has been a pitching staff that is 26th in the Major Leagues in ERA. A bright spot on the staff has been reliever Brad Ziegler, but the Diamondbacks were without Ziegler on Wednesday after being hit in the ribs with a line drive in Tuesday's game.

As reported by Steve Gilbert of MLB.com, Ziegler was very sore yesterday and was going to continue to receive treatment after being hit by a line drive in the ribs on Tuesday. He's thankful he wasn't more seriously injured.  Manager Kirk Gibson is hoping the day today will help speed up the recovery process.
"He's pretty bruised up. [I] was a little worried. I cross my fingers that it won't be that long."
Ziegler, in his seventh Major League season, is 4-1 with a 2.84 ERA in 52 games.  The veteran, who has pitched for the A's and the Diamondbacks, has been one of the best relievers on baseball during his career. In 453 career games, Ziegler is 29-16 with a 2.45 ERA.
