Diamondbacks Injury Update: Chris Owings has yet to take live BP

By on 7/18/2014 09:45:00 AM

Diamondbacks shortstop Chris Owings, on the DL since June 29 with a left shoulder strain, has taken dry swings but has not progressed to the next level, said DBacks manager Kirk Gibson on Thursday, as reported by Adam Lichtenstein of MLB.com. Prior to the injury, Owings hit .277/.313/.458 (OPS+ 112) with six homers, seven stolen bases and 21 RBI in 72 games. In the interim, Arizona has used Didi Gregorius at shortstop, backed up by Nick Ahmed.

An MRI taken on Owings' shoulder showed no structural damage, but his progress has been slower than originally projected.

Owings, 22, was the Diamondbacks first round draft pick in 2009 and made his debut September 3, 2013. During his September "cup of coffee," Owings went 16 for 55 (.291). He is pre-arb and under team control through 2019.
