Dodgers Injury Update: Hanley Ramirez, Yasiel Puig

By on 7/24/2014 02:30:00 PM

Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez and right fielder Yasiel Puig were both hit by pitches in the left hand in recent games, causing them to miss time. Ramirez took a fastball on July 20, and Puig took one on the 19th. Ramirez has not played at all since getting hit, and Puig had only one plate appearance Wednesday. After an off day Thursday, both could return to the lineup Friday.

Hanley Ramirez

Ramirez was hit with a 99-mph fastball from St. Louis's Trevor Rosenthal in the ninth inning of Sunday night's game. He has not swung a bat since then, and according to the Dodgers Injury Report, he will work only inside until at least Friday. That hit by pitch was the second of the game for Ramirez, who also took a 98-mph Carlos Martinez fastball off his left shoulder.

Ramirez is hitting .273 with 11 HR and 49 RBI in 86 games.

Yasiel Puig

Puig took an 84-mph fastball from St. Louis's Joe Kelly in the third inning last Saturday. He missed all of Sunday through Tuesday and pinch hit (walked) and played one inning in center field Wednesday.

Puig is hitting .308 with 12 HR and 52 RBI in 93 games.'s Ken Gurnick said that manager Don Mattingly felt more optimistic about Puig returning Friday than Ramirez but that both are possible. Ramirez, though, would have to have a full batting practice session before determining if he can play.

The Dodgers are 56-47 and trail San Francisco by two games in the N.L. West as play begins on July 24.
