Giants Injury Update: Brandon Belt to be activated Friday

By on 7/04/2014 10:30:00 AM

The San Francisco Giants will finally get first baseman Brandon Belt back on Friday as they look to snap out of the slump that has seen them surrender their huge lead in the NL West to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle tweeted that the Giants optioned rookie Adam Duvall back to the minors to make space for Belt's activation on Friday:

Belt has now missed eight weeks with the broken thumb that he suffered on May 9th. Six weeks was the original projected timeframe for recovery. Michael Morse, Duvall, Buster Posey, Joaquin Arias and Hector Sanchez have all made starts at first with Belt out. Duvall made a key error at first during Thursday's 7-2 loss to the Cardinals, tossing a simple throw into center field when trying to get the force at second. The Cards went on to score three runs in the inning.

Belt had appeared to be in the midst of a power breakout when he went on the DL, blasting nine home runs in just 139 PA, although he had just four doubles. The 26-year-old hit 39 doubles and 17 home runs last season in what was his best year to date. The Giants could really do with both Belt and the injured Angel Pagan back in the lineup if they are to stand any chance of keeping up with the Dodgers this summer.
