Giants Injury Update: Matt Cain placed on DL with elbow inflammation

By on 7/21/2014 01:00:00 PM

The San Francisco Giants have placed starting pitcher Matt Cain on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right elbow.

The team announced the news Monday afternoon:
The Giants also said that Yusmeiro Petit will start Tuesday in Cain's place:
Cain has been dealing with elbow soreness lately. Manager Bruce Bochy is hopeful that some time off may help Cain get back to 100 percent.

Last Friday Bruce Bochy told Henry Schulman of,
"His elbow has been cranky at times going back to spring training. Right now he’s scheduled to go. He played catch yesterday. He should be good to go."
The scary thing is that this is Cain's third time on the disabled list this season as noted by Alex Pavlovic of the San Jose Mercury News.
Cain has the worst ERA on the team with a 4.18 ERA. He had only won two of his 15 starts. He has struggled this season. The Los Angeles Dodgers are tied with the Giants for first place in National League West. The Giants need all the help they can get against a poised Dodgers team. Cain is still better than most pitchers that the Giants could use in his place. For now, the Giants must survive without Cain.
