Indians Injury Update: Asdrubal Cabrera, Michael Bourn, Justin Masterson

By on 7/26/2014 06:00:00 AM

The Cleveland Indians entered Friday's game against the Kansas City Royals with a record of 51-51, third in the American League Central. At seven and a half games out in the division, the Indians need to make a run to get back into the race. One thing that will help the Indians is the return of key players, such as Asdrubal Cabrera, Michael Bourn and Justin Masterson, from the disabled list.

Our own Jacob Fagan reported on Tuesday that Cabrera left Monday's game with lower back spasms.  Cabrera tweaked his back while fielding a ground ball in the second inning.

An update on Cabrera, as reported by Jordan Bastian of MLB.com, is that manager Terry Francona is optimistic that Caberra can return sometimes this weekend against the Royals.
"He's doing much better. He showed up and it's loosening up a lot. He's kind of working into some activities. He'll do more baseball activities [Friday] with an eye toward, I think Saturday might be a little ambitious, but I think Sunday is [a possibility]."
In Cabrera's absence, Mike Aviles started on Tuesday, while recently called up infielder Jose Ramirez started on Wednesday and Thursday.

Cabrera, in his eighth Major League season, is batting .247 with nine home runs and 39 RBI. He set career highs in home runs and RBI in 2011 when he hit 25 home runs and has 92 RBI. Cabrera is a career .270 hitter with 82 home runs and 429 RBI.

Our own Raymond Bureau reported on July 18 that Masterson would begin a Minor League rehab assignment on July 20 and if all went well, could return on July 25.

Masterson is still on the disabled list and was scheduled for a Minor League rehab start for Triple-A Columbus on Friday. Francona was asked what can be expected of Masterson when he returns to the Indians.
"The best would be for him to get hot, and what a kick in the pants that would be for us. What a boost. Because he has that ability -- we all know it -- and we've seen bits and pieces. We just haven't seen him really put it together too much. If he was able to get hot, that would be such a pickup for us."
Masterson, in his seventh Major League season, is 4-6 with a 5.51 ERA in 19 starts. He's struggled with his control, walking 56 in 98 innings.  The veteran pitcher has played for the Red Sox and Indians and has a career record of 57-69 with a 4.16 ERA.

As for center fielder Michael Bourn, who has been on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring injury, he played long-toss in the outfield on Thursday and continued to do light running drills.  Although he is progressing, Bourn will need a rehab assignment and there is no timetable for his return.

Bourn, in his ninth Major League season, is batting .267 with three home runs and 21 RBI. The veteran outfielder has played for the Phillies, Astros, Braves and Indians and has a career average of .270 with 31 home runs, 286 RBI and 306 stolen bases.
