Jets Injury Update: Antwan Barnes hopes to be ready for training camp

By on 7/10/2014 04:30:00 PM

Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk reports that New York Jets linebacker Antwan Barnes will "probably" be ready to go when training starts later this month. Barnes has not played since suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in Week 5's 30-28 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

Barnes has not yet made a full recovery from his torn ACL, but says he thinks he's more than 70 percent healthy at this point.

"I will let the trainers and medical staff handle all that. I don't put timetables [on injuries], I just want to do work,"Barnes told Metro New York. "But everyday I'm feeling better and I feel progress. It's good. You don't want to push too hard, hurry back too fast. Then you get hurt again and that doesn't help this team. I just want to get back there man and play. I miss football and miss being out there with these guys."

If Barnes can make a full recovery and return to form, he will likely have a role as a pass rushing specialist in head coach Rex Ryan's 3-4 defensive scheme. Barnes did well in that role last year, recording two sacks in five games before his season was cut short by injury.

With all of the concerns surrounding the Jets suspect secondary, having Barnes' pass rushing abilities available would take some of the pressure off the defensive backs. Barnes' presence would also allow Ryan to get creative with the defensive play calling.
