Jets Injury Update: Chris Johnson medically cleared

By on 7/24/2014 08:00:00 AM

New York Jets running back Chris Johnson has been medically cleared to participate in training camp,  reports Rich Cimini of ESPN New York. Johnson had offseason knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus. As a precaution, the Jets kept him on the sideline during OTA's and minicamp.

The Tennessee Titans released the one-time 2,000 yard rusher in April. The Jets signed the 28-year-old Johnson to a two-year, $8 million contract. "I'm pretty good," he said of his knee. "I'm ready to do whatever they ask me to do."

The Jets probably will put him on a modified practice schedule. They've done this in the past with veterans coming off injuries. Their objective is to have him peaking for the September 7 opener against the Oakland Raiders.

Johnson will likely share carries with Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell.

The Jets hope Johnson can be a home-run threat out of the backfield, despite the fact he's coming off a career low in rushing yards last season.
