Marlins Injury Update: Brad Hand, Adeiny Hechavarria

By on 7/03/2014 06:45:00 AM

The Miami Marlins have activated left-hander Brad Hand in anticipation of Thursday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies, when Hand will take the mound against Kyle Kendrick. The news was tweeted by the Miami Herald's Manny Navarro, who also noted that Tom Koehler will make way temporarily, going on the paternity list following his win on Wednesday:
Hand was placed on the disabled list on May 24th with a sprained right ankle. Prior to his injury, Hand had been pitching out of the bullpen after making two poor April starts, getting torched for 12 hits and eight earned runs in just 6 1/3 innings. Like many pitchers, the lefty has performed better in relief over the course of his four-year major league career, with an ERA almost two runs better, although he has not solved his command problems as a reliever and is walking more than 14% of batters faced this year.

Meanwhile, shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria is approaching a return.'s Joe Frisaro reports that the 25-year-old is set to head to High-A Jupiter on Friday if all goes well in his third throwing session and batting practice on Thursday. Manager Mike Redmond told Frisaro that he was open to Hechavarria playing more than one rehab game if necessary. The young Cuban is on the DL with a triceps strain.
