Mets Injury Update: Jon Niese on course for July 21st return

By on 7/14/2014 10:45:00 AM

The New York Mets pitching staff is about to get a big boost as Adam Rubin has reported on ESPN New York that left handed, top of the rotation starter Jon Niese is set to return soon after pitching in a simulated game on Sunday July 13th.

Although he is eligible to return from the disabled list on the first Sunday after the break, Rubin stated that he will most likely pitch against the Seattle Mariners on July 21st, where he could face lefty Robinson Cano, who is much more of a threat than anyone in the Padres lineup.

By returning Niese to the rotation, the Mets staff immediately becomes stronger.  Niese, who holds a career 3.86 ERA, was off to his best statistical season of his career before his shoulder strain.  Through his first 17 starts, he has a 2.96 ERA with 74 strikeouts and 1.21 WHIP.  With the Mets floundering towards the bottom of the NL East, his return could put them right back in the race.
