By on 7/10/2014 10:38:00 PM

Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond was removed from Thursday's game against the Baltimore Orioles after he was hit on the right hand by a pitch from side-armer Darren O'Day in the 8th inning (video below). He was replaced by Danny Espinosa. Desmond went 1 for 3 with an RBI as the Nats lost 4-3.
Desmond is hitting .241/.293/.429 with 16 homers and 55 RBI.

Desmond, 28, was drafted by the Montreal Expos in 2004 (3rd round) and made his debut for the Nationals September 10, 2009. He was named to the 2012 All-Star Team and won a Silver Slugger in 2013. He is signed to a two-year $17.5 million contract  that takes him through 2015, at which point he will  be eligible for free agency.
