Nationals Injury Update: Jordan Zimmermann to throw bullpen, avoids DL

By on 7/18/2014 12:15:00 PM

It looks like Nationals starter Jordan Zimmermann will avoid a DL-stint, as the right-hander was able to practice Thursday with the team and will throw a bullpen Friday or Saturday, according to William Ladson of Zimmerman was pullled from his previous start on July 11 with a sore right biceps, forcing him to withdraw from the All-Star Game. He is 6-5 with a 3.03 ERA in 19 starts.

Zimmermann's next scheduled start is July 21 in Colorado.

Zimmerman, 28, was drafted by the Nationals in 2007 (2nd round) and made his debut April 20, 2009. He was also named to the 2013 All-Star Team, leading the league with 19 wins, together with a 3.25 ERA, four complete games and two complete game shutouts. He underwent Tommy John surgery in August of 2009, and his recovery/rehab and innings limits in 2011 were the model for his more famous rotation-mate, Stephen Strasburg, a year later. Zimmermann is signed to a two-year $24 million contract through 2015 after which he is eligible for free agency.
