Purke, 23, was the Rangers first round draft pick in 2009 but he did not sign. The Nationals drafted him in 2011 (third round), and he signed a four-year $4.1 million contract ($2.75 million bonus). After the 2013 season he was ranked by Baseball America as the Nats No. 11 prospect. At Double-A Harrisburg he went 1-6 with an ERA of 8.04 in eight starts prior to the surgery.
