Nationals Injury Update: Ryan Zimmerman on DL with strained hamstring

By on 7/23/2014 03:30:00 PM

The Washington Nationals have announced that they have placed third baseman Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring suffered in Tuesday night's win over the Colorado Rockies. They have recalled infielder Zach Walters from Triple-A Syracuse to take Zimmerman's spot on the roster.

Our own Rose Ingberman reported Wednesday morning about Zimmerman's early exit Tuesday night, describing the injury. Zimmerman pulled up a few steps shy of the first base bag while beating out a double-play relay in the top of the sixth inning. The video shows him falling to the ground immediately. He needed help getting up and getting started walking off the field, but he made it to the dugout under his own power. Danny Espinosa pinch ran.

This is Zimmerman's second stint on the disabled list this year, but the Nationals hope this one will not last as long as the first one did.'s Spencer Fordin reminds us that Zimmerman spent 44 days on the DL earlier this year with a fractured thumb. He played left field for a while after coming back (while Bryce Harper sat out) before moving back to third base. Anthony Rendon started third base Wednesday, and Espinosa played second.

Walters, meanwhile, was hitting .300 with 15 HR, 48 RBI, and a .358 on-base average in 60 games with Syracuse. He is looking to improve on his .182 average in 27 games earlier this season with the big club.
