Orioles Injury Update: Ubaldo Jimenez will need rehab assignment

By on 7/14/2014 10:00:00 AM

Ubaldo Jimenez, who was just recently placed on the disabled list this past week with an ankle injury, will not be returning as soon as expected.  Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun is reporting that he was "tentative while throwing during his workout on Sunday and will therefore need a rehab  assignment."
In the same column, manager Buck Showalter said Jimenez was "still favoring it a lot, he was trying to protect  [the ankle] in his throw."

He is eligible to come off the disabled list on July 23rd, but instead Connolly reports that he should begin his rehab assignment that day.

By losing Jimenez, the Orioles lose one of their biggest free agent signings from the off-season and a pitcher who has struggled through the first half.  In his first 18 starts, Jimenez has gone 3-8 with a 4.52 ERA and also leading the leagues with 60 walks.  Upon his return, the Orioles will need him to pitch like the pitcher he was expected to be if they are going to hold on to their slim AL East lead.
