By on 7/25/2014 10:00:00 AM

The Baltimore Orioles right handed pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez is pleased with his Wednesday bullpen session in which he threw 35 pitches and performed running drills to test his right ankle, according to Brittany Ghiroli of  Jimenez twisted his ankle in a parking lot the day before the All-Star Break; Orioles manager Buck Showalter was quoted by Ghiroli as saying that Jimenez return “is not imminent”.  Third baseman Manny Machado was a late scratch Tuesday night after experiencing back spasms during batting practice.  He sat out of Wednesday’s game despite feeling better.

Both Machado and Showalter expect Machado to be back ‘shortly’.   Machado told reporters that he hopes he will be back by the end of the week, according to Baltimore Sun’s Eduardo Encina.

Jimenez has struggled throughout the season with a 4.52 ERA and 3-8 record in the first half of the season.  The Orioles starting rotation has been performing well in the second half of the as the first place Orioles have gone 6-4 in the last ten games.
The Orioles need Machado back both for his Gold Glove defense and his hot bat; he is batting .400 in 45 at bats in July.  He is batting .267/.317/.422 with 10 home runs and 23 RBI’s on the season.
