By on 7/19/2014 10:45:00 AM

The San Diego Padres began the second half of the season with a 5-4 loss to the New York Mets. The loss dropped the Padres to 41-53, twelve games out in the National League West. The Padres, who are 30th in the league in scoring, were without first baseman Tommy Medica in the starting lineup, due to a groin injury. Jake Goebbert was in the lineup for Medica and went 0-for-3 with a run scored.

Our own Darius Austin reported on July 11 that Medica left the game on July 10 after experiencing tightness in the groin. He grounded out in the top of the second before he was replaced by Rene Rivera in the bottom of the inning.

As reported by Chris Cwik of, Medica was expected to miss multiple games with his groin injury, but there were thoughts that he could be back in the starting lineup after the All-Star break. Medica did appear as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning and grounded out to third.

Medica is batting .228 with four home runs and 13 RBI in 123 at bats this season. In his second Major League season, Medica is a career .250 hitter with seven home runs and 23 RBI. He's currently listed as day-to-day.
