Phillies Injury Update: Cliff Lee gets hit hard in final rehab start

By on 7/15/2014 09:15:00 AM

Cliff Lee completed his final rehab start last night, and it wasn't pretty.  After allowing five unearned runs in the first inning, Lee was only able to last 4.2 innings on the night.  In all Lee threw 76 pitches, giving up eight runs (three earned) with one walk and two strikeouts in the loss.

While the results were clearly frustrating for Lee, he remained upbeat about the future, telling Josh Appel, of the Clearwater Threshers, "I felt okay.  It's nice to get my pitch count up.  I feel like I can go out and throw 90-100 pitches."

By getting his pitch count up, Lee is now slated to return to the Phillies for his next start.  He is expected to return on July 21st, when the club returns home to take on the San Francisco Giants.

With the team struggling to find consistency behind Cole Hamels, Lee's return is imperative.  His return not only brings stability to the rotation, but it also brings possible trade value should the Phillies decide to go that route before the deadline.

This season Lee has gone 4-4 with a 3.18 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 68 innings.
