Pirates Injury Update: Gerrit Cole, Pedro Alvarez, Clint Barmes

By on 7/24/2014 02:00:00 PM

The Pittsburgh Pirates have stayed relatively healthy throughout 2014, but they have a few key players out at the time as they fight for a division title. Here are the latest updates on Gerrit Cole, Pedro Alvarez, and Clint Barmes via's Stephen Pianovich.

Gerrit Cole
Pianovich reports that Gerrit Cole threw a simulated game Wednesday, throwing 70 pitches to Pirates hitters without any physical problems. Cole used all of his pitches, getting better control of each one as he threw more. Cole is unsure of when he will start a Minor League rehab assignment, but Pianovich says it "is likely in Cole's near future."

Cole is on the disabled list because of a strained right lat. He last pitched on July 4. He allowed only one hit in five innings but came out with soreness. After Wednesday's simulation, Pianovich quoted Cole describing how his lat felt during and after his session. Said Cole,
"It felt good. It was a little rusty in some areas, but it got better as it went on.... We tried to focus on feeling good when I started throwing rather than working through stuff, and I think it's paid off so far."
Cole is 7-4 with a 3.78 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 14 starts this season. He spent much of June on the DL because of shoulder fatigue.

Pedro Alvarez
Third baseman Pedro Alvarez sat out of Wednesday's game because of discomfort in his left knee. Alvarez left Tuesday night's game in the fourth inning after aggravating his knee while running out a double. He took batting practice Wednesday, and with a Pirates off day Thursday, Alvarez could possibly play at Colorado Friday night. He is day-to-day.

Alvarez is hitting .239 with 15 HR and 47 RBI in 97 games. He has played 149 and 152 games and hit 30 and 36 home runs, respectively, in each of the past two years.

Clint Barmes
Infielder Clint Barmes is recovering faster than expected according to team physicians. He started jogging Wednesday, and he will travel to Colorado with the team this weekend. Barnes went on the disabled list July 6, retroactive to June 30, with a left groin strain. Pianovich says that Barmes will begin taking batting practice within a week.

Barmes is hitting .239 with 4 RBI in 42 games. He is a valuable utility man who plays all four infield positions.

The Pirates will spend their off day Thursday tied with St. Louis for second place in the N.L. Central, 2.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers pending the outcome of the Brewers' game with the Mets Thursday night. St. Louis is also off Thursday.
