Pirates Injury Update: Gerrit Cole rehab result

By on 7/29/2014 07:00:00 AM

As the Pittsburgh Pirates work towards getting back to the top of the National League Central, they got some very encouraging news from AAA Indianapolis. Ace Gerrit Cole looked spectacular during his scoreless five inning rehab outing with the Indians.

In his start, Cole threw 81 pitches (50 strikes) and struck out seven batters.  Jake Seiner of reports that he attacked hitters and Indians' pitching coach, Tom Filer, was impressed with what he saw, saying "his fastball had a lot of life to it." is reporting that Cole is expected to make one more start this weekend, in which he will be limited to 100 pitches.  If all goes well, he is expected to then rejoin the Pirates rotation.

Being one of the brightest, young arms in the game today, Cole's return will provide a major boost to the Pirates rotation.  Last season, he became the club's best pitcher in the second half, as he carried his success into the postseason.

This year his impending return could not come at a better time.  Through his first 14 starts, Cole has gone 7-4 this season with a 3.78 ERA.  If he can get back to his dominant form, he can be exactly what the Pirates need to make their second straight run to October.
