Pirates Injury Update: Gerrit Cole will not return July 20

By on 7/12/2014 09:00:00 AM

Although Pirates right hander Gerrit Cole is eligible to return from the DL on July 20, Pirates manager Clink Hurdle said he will not be available to start that day, according to Rob Biertempfel of triblive.com. Cole missed almost all of June with shoulder fatigue, returning June 28 only to get shellacked by the Mets, and then was pulled from his July 4 start with stiffness in his right lat (back muscle). Cole is 7-4 with a 3.74 ERA in 14 starts.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 draft, Cole made his debut June 11, 2013. In his rookie year he went 10-7 with a 3.22 ERA (111 ERA+), striking out 100 in 117 innings pitched. In the postseason, Cole started Game 2 (win) and Game 5 (loss) of the NLDS against the St. Louis Cardinals. Cole is pre-arb and under team control through 2019.
