Pirates Injury Update: Gerrit Cole will throw Thursday side session

By on 7/15/2014 07:30:00 AM

As reported earlier, Pirates right hander Gerrit Cole is not expected to return when he is eligible (July 20). We now have this tweet on the current plan for him.
Cole missed almost all of June with shoulder fatigue, returning June 28 only to get shellacked by the Mets, and then was pulled from his July 4 start with stiffness in his right lat (back muscle). He is 7-4 with a 3.74 ERA in 14 starts. The Pirates (49-46) are locked in a tight race for the NL Central,

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 draft, Cole made his debut June 11, 2013. In his rookie year he went 10-7 with a 3.22 ERA (111 ERA+), striking out 100 in 117 innings pitched. In the postseason, Cole started Game 2 (win) and Game 5 (loss) of the NLDS against the St. Louis Cardinals. Cole is pre-arb and under team control through 2019.
