By on 7/23/2014 07:00:00 AM

The Pirates placed Starling Marte on the seven-day concussion disabled list Wednesday after taking a 93 mph fastball to the helmet 5 days earlier, according to Stephen Pianovich of MLB.com. Brent Morel was promoted form Triple-A Indianapolis to take Marte’s roster spot.

Marte, 25, was hit by Adam Ottavino of the Rockies on Friday and stayed in the game until being removed for a defensive replacement. He sat out Saturday, pinch-hit on Sunday, started Monday, and was unavailable on Tuesday, then placed on the DL Wednesday.

This season, Marte has a line of .255/.328/.385 with 5 home runs, 34 RBI, 23 walks, 95 strikeouts, and a .713 OPS in 86 games. He has stolen 21 bases while being caught 6 times. He signed a 6 year, $31 million contract in the offseason where he will be a Pirate through 2019, which includes team options for 2020 and 2021, unless he is traded.

In 2013, Marte had a slash of .280/.343/.441 with 12 home runs, 35 RBI, 25 walks, 138 strikeouts, and a .784 OPS in 135 games. He stole 41 games and was caught 15 times. He had an impressive 5.1 WAR according to ESPN.

The Pirates are 54-47 and in second place 2.5 games behind the first place Brewers in the National League Central. In their last 10, they are 7-3 and just took the first two games from the Dodgers as they end the series tomorrow in Pittsburgh.
