Pirates Injury Update: Starling Marte, Clint Barmes

By on 7/31/2014 06:15:00 AM

Pittsburgh Pirates left-fielder Starling Marte is starting to feel better after the concussion he sustained right after the All-Star Break, although he wasn't able to return yesterday when he was eligible. Jenn Menendez of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Marte was set to talk with manager Clint Hurdle yesterday about how he was feeling following Tuesday's workout, with a rehab assignment still a possibility. In other Pirates news, infielder Clint Barmes also stepped up activity in his recovery from a groin sprain.

Hurdle told Menendez that there were still a few steps to go before they could be confident in bringing Marte back:
“There’s a process involved — exertion, getting the heart rate up,” Hurdle said. “[We’ll] see how he functions through this evening, see how he feels [today]. He hasn’t seen any live pitching. Hasn’t seen any velocity. Optimistic that [it] was a good day and built some momentum for [today].”

Tom Singer of reported that Barmes did some agility running on the field Tuesday, with Hurdle saying he was making 'good progress'. The original timeframe for recovery from the sprain was between 4 and 6 weeks, a period Barmes is now coming into, so he should start to get back into game action in the near future. Jordy Mercer has started every game at shortstop since Barmes went down with the injury and already appeared to be first choice beforehand, so the veteran will likely act as a utility infielder off the bench the majority of the time.
