Rangers Injury Update: Alex Rios, Jake Smolinski, Derek Holland, Geovany Soto

By on 7/31/2014 03:45:00 AM

Texas Rangers outfielder Alex Rios left Wednesday night's game in the third inning after being hit by a pitch on his left quad, according to T.R. Sullivan of Stefan Stevenson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram tweeted that fellow outfielder Jake Smolinski was also diagnosed with a small fracture in his foot, not just a bone bruise as initially thought:

Sullivan says that Rios' removal was a 'precautionary measure', perhaps unsurprising in the light of the trade talks surrounding the outfielder. Dan Robertson replaced Rios in right for the Rangers. Although the small fracture is a change in the initial diagnosis for Smolinski, it seems it won't affect his return timetable too much, although Sullivan does note that he isn't yet running full speed.

Two more Rangers are approaching a return, with Geovany Soto looking at a rehab assignment as soon as Friday, while Derek Holland made a rehab start on Wednesday night. Soto told Sullivan that he had healed faster than expected, with his groin injury not as bad as initially feared. He should be ready to return shortly after he is eligible next Wednesday, if not the day itself. Holland struck out four in two scoreless innings at Double A, with Sullivan reporting he will start again Monday at Triple A Round Rock. A late August return is still the plan for the left-hander.
