Rangers Injury Update: Jake Smolinski placed on DL

By on 7/26/2014 08:29:00 AM

Texas Rangers outfielder Jake Smolinski was moved to the 15-day disabled list retroactive to July 22. This made room for righty Jerome Williams who started Friday against the Oakland Athletics.

Smolinski fouled a pitch off his left foot Monday against the Yankees. X-rays were negative, but since he is a rookie, manager Ron Washington and the Rangers did not want to push it with him. Washington told Grace Raynor from,
Life in baseball. Tough break, too. He still has some discomfort and we want to make sure it's right. Just go back on the disabled list and track the days that it went back to and we're looking at maybe 10 days, 11 days. Give him a chance to heal 100 percent."
The Rangers have dealt with injuries all season long. They have used the disabled list 23 times this season, which leads the Majors. Only seven players have been active all season: Elvis Andrus, Robinson Chirinos, Shin-Soo Choo, Neal Cotts, Leonys Martin, Alex Rios, and Shawn Tolleson.

Smolinski has played in 11 games with the Rangers and he is off to a nice start batting .389 with no home runs and five RBI's. He could be a guy that the Rangers rely on as they make a playoff push.
