By on 7/25/2014 05:00:00 PM

Texas Rangers designated hitter Mitch Moreland was officially sent to the 60-day disabled list on Thursday. He is out for the season because of ankle reconstruction surgery in June. Also, the Rangers sent left handed pitcher Joseph Ortiz to Double-A Frisco to continue his rehab assignment.

Mitch Moreland
Monday, Moreland underwent ligament reconstruction and bone realignment on his left ankle. Larry Hartstein from says he will be reexamined in a week and he will not be back this season. Moreland has hit .246/.279/.347 with two homers and 23 RBI's in 52 games this season.

Joseph Ortiz
Ortiz was placed on the 60-day disabled list on February 14 following a motorcycle accident, which fractured his foot. Yesterday, he was moved to Triple-A Round Rock after throwing a scoreless inning in Arizona League play. He posted a 4.32 ERA in 44.2 innings last season. He is expected to join the Rangers bullpen sometime in August.

  1. It's somewhat misleading to say that Joseph Ortiz was injured in a "motorcycle accident." He was not riding a motorcycle but rather was run over by the driver of a motorcycle while he himself was a pedestrian. Joseph was not engaging in an activity that might have been prohibited by his contract.
