Rays Injury Update: David Price scratched due to illness

Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher David Price will miss his scheduled start Saturday evening against the Toronto Blue Jays due to an illness, reports Matt Baker of The Tampa Bay Times. Jake Odorizzi will start in Price’s place.

Price left Tropicana Field during Tampa Bay’s loss Friday night and was scratched after the game. The Rays simply moved Odorizzi up a day, as he will remain on normal rest due to the team’s off day on Thursday.

Tampa Bay is hopeful Price will be able to recover in time to start Sunday in the finale of the series against the Blue Jays. If Price does start, he will likely be unable to participate in Tuesday’s All-Star game, opening up another spot on the roster.

Price has been an absolute roll lately after a bit of a shaky start. He owns a 3.42 ERA (3.13 FIP) with a K/BB ratio of nearly eight in 19 starts.

Sitting at 42-53, Tampa Bay is expected to trade Price before the July 31 deadline.

Baker also reports that outfielder Wil Myers is nearing a return, first baseman/outfielder Jerry Sands will miss the rest of the season and outfielder David DeJesus is not expected to return this month.

Following an outstanding rookie season, Myers was unable to get going in 2014 before fracturing his wrist in late May. Myers had his cast removed Friday night and is targeting a mid-August return.

The Rays have missed DeJesus, who posted an .801 OPS before fracturing his left hand on June 19. With all of the injuries, Kevin Kiermaier has received regular playing time in right field and rewarded the Rays with 3.0 WAR in 46 games.
