Rays Injury Update: Jerry Sands out for the season

By on 7/11/2014 07:00:00 PM

Tampa Bay Rays left fielder Jerry Sands will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a strained tendon in his left wrist says Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. The announcement came late Friday afternoon after Sands went on the disabled list three weeks ago.

Sands was hoping to get more playing time, but a .190 average and then a wrist injury ended that attempt. He had played in just 12 games for the Rays this year, getting only four hits in 21 at bats, though he did manage to drive in four runs. He last played on June 22.

As our own Kerry Kauffman noted when it happened, Sands strained his wrist taking his last swing on June 22. He wore a splint from then on, and the team thought he would miss three weeks, which would have had him back on the field by the All-Star break or very soon after. The surgery will end his season.

Sands is a career .240 hitter in 82 games in parts of three seasons with the Dodgers and Rays. This year was his first as a Ray.
