Rays Injury Update: Joel Peralta may hit DL with virus

By on 7/21/2014 11:15:00 AM

The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Minnesota Twins on Sunday by the score of 5-3 behind solid pitching from Chris Archer, who allowed one earned run and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. The win improved the Rays to 47-53, fourth in the American League East. The Rays were without the services of reliever Joel Peralta for the entire series and he may end up on the disabled list due to a virus.

As reported by Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, Peralta was achy and had a fever, which kept him from being able to pitch the entire weekend.  Peralta has what is believed to be the chikungunya virus, which is transferred by mosquitoes in the Caribbean.

Peralta was home in the Dominican Republic over the All-Star break and started filling ill on Friday. Being that the symptoms can last up to a week,  Peralta may hit the disabled list, retroactive to July 13.

Peralta, in his 10th Major League season, is 2-3 with 13 holds and a 4.15 ERA in 43 games this season.  The veteran has pitched for the Angels, Royals, Nationals and Rays and has a career record of 15-32 with 150 holds and an ERA of 3.89.
