Rays Injury Update: Ryan Hanigan placed on DL

By on 7/17/2014 05:15:00 PM

The Tampa Bay Rays enter the second half of the season tomorrow against the Minnesota Twins with a record of 44-53, fourth in the American League East. To have any chance to make a run a wild card, the Rays will need good health and more production throughout the roster. But they'll begin the second half without the services of Ryan Hanigan, who is heading to the disabled list due to a lingering oblique injury.

Our own Pete Schwichtenberg reported on July 14 that Hanigan was expected back in the lineup soon. Hangian has had injury problems this season, out from May 27 through June 10 with a right hamstring injury. He then was sidelined with a stiff neck and now has an oblique injury.

Marc Topkin, who covers the Rays for the Tampa Bay Times, tweeted the following on Hanigan.
With Hanigan on the disabled list, expect Jose Molina to be the Rays primary catcher, with Ali Solis will return to serve as the backup.

Hanigan is in his eighth Major League season and first with the Rays. He's batting .212 with four home runs and 27 RBI this season. Hanigan has a career batting average of .257 with 24 home runs and 165 RBI in 535 games.
