Rays Injury Update: Tim Beckham starts rehab following ACL surgery

By on 7/22/2014 01:30:00 PM

Tampa Bay Rays infielder Tim Beckham has begun a rehab assignment in the Gulf Coast League in an attempt to return from a torn ACL, reports Dennis Maffezzoli of the Sarasota Harold-Tribune:

Beckham tore his ACL in December during an offseason workout. He collected a triple and two singles in his first live game action all season with the GCL Rays on Monday.

After being drafted first overall in 2008, Beckham was consistently rated as one of Tampa Bay’s top prospects, but has never panned out.  His best season in the minors came in Triple-A last year, where he hit .276/.342/.387 with 17 stolen bases.

Beckham appeared briefly in the major leagues last September, collecting three hits in eight plate appearances.

Even before the knee injury, Beckham was unlikely to get much playing time in Tampa Bay this season. Beckham is just 24 years old and was still ranked as the Rays’ No. 12 prospect by before the year, so he still could realize at least some of his potential.
