As reported by Craig Calcaterra of NBCSports.com, Ortiz left the game after hurting his back with a swing. He said it was just back spasms and there wasn't much cause for concern. Ortiz is currently listed as day-to-day and it's uncertain whether or not he'll miss any time. His status for tomorrow's game against the Tampa Bay Rays will most likely be known by tomorrow afternoon.
If Ortiz cannot go, Jonny Gomes, who pinch hit for Ortiz today, could get the start at designated hitter. Gomes is batting .239 with six home runs and 32 RBI this season.
Ortiz, in his 18th Major League season, is batting .253 with 24 home runs and 72 RBI this season. Ortiz has have seven seasons with 30 or more home runs and seven with 100 or more RBI. The veteran has played with the Twins and Red Sox and has a career batting average of .285 with 455 home runs and 1,501 RBI.
