By on 7/22/2014 06:30:00 AM

The Boston Red Sox hammered the Toronto Blue Jays Monday night by the score of 14-1. At 25th in the Major Leagues in runs scored, the 14-run explosion was a great thing to see for the Red Sox. The win improved the Red Sox to 47-52, seven games out in the American League East. On the injury front, backup catcher Ryan Lavarnway continued his rehab assignment at Double-A Portland on Monday night.

Our own Darius Austin reported on July 19 that Red Sox sent Lavarnway to their Gulf Coast League affiliate.  He was the designated hitter on Friday and first base on Saturday.  Lavarnway went 2-for-5 with a walk in the two games.

An update on Lavarnway, as reported by Larry Hartstein of, is that he began a rehab assignment with Double-A Portland last night.  He played first base and batted third, going 0-for-4 with an RBI and a strikeout in the Sea Dogs' 6-4 win.

Lavarnway is 0-for-4 in four games with the Red Sox this season.  He has played parts of the last four seasons with the Red Sox and has a career batting average of .205 with five home runs and 34 RBI in 273 at bats.
