Red Sox Injury Update: Shane Victorino to rehab Sunday in Boston

By on 7/13/2014 07:30:00 AM

The Boston Red Sox fell to the Houston Astros on Saturday by the score of 3-2. The Red Sox banged out 13 hits, but left nine men on base. It's been a common theme for the Red Sox, who are just 26th in the Major Leagues in runs scored. Center fielder Shane Victorino could be the spark the Red Sox need, but he's been slow to recover from injury. Victorino will play in Boston on Sunday before the next step in his rehab will be determined.

I reported on Friday that Victorino resumed his rehab after his back soreness returned and pushed his rehab assignment back from Wednesday to Thursday.

An update on Victorino, as reported by Chris Towers of, is that he was scratched on Saturday from his expected start at Double-A Portland. But this time, it was not due to any setback. Instead, Victorino will return to Boston to play in Class A Lowell's Futures game at Fenway Park.

It's likely that Victorino will be examined by team doctors following Sunday's game to determine the extent of his back and hamstring issues. Hopefully, there will be some indication as to when the Red Sox can expect Victorino to return.

Injuries have limited Victorino to just 21 games in his second season with the Red Sox. this season. The 11-year veteran is batting .242 with a home run and 10 RBI.  Last year he batted .294 with 15 home runs and 61 RBI. Victorino, a two-time World Series Champion, is a career .276 hitter with 106 home runs, 480 RBI and 224 stolen bases.
