Reds Injury Update: Brandon Phillips has thumb ligament tear

By on 7/10/2014 04:29:00 PM

Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips will undergo surgery on Friday to repair a torn left thumb ligament. John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer tweeted confirmation of the diagnosis and surgery:
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal was the first to report that it looked as though Phillips would be out for a while. St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina has also just been diagnosed with a torn thumb ligament and is expected to miss 8-12 weeks. That timeframe would clearly mean that Phillips wouldn't be able to return any earlier than mid-August. The second baseman hurt the thumb last night when his glove hand got stuck underneath him while he was making a play.

Ramon Santiago, who started at second base today for the Reds, seems likely to be the primary fill-in with Phillips out. The whole right side of the Reds infield figures to be shelved for some time, with Joey Votto also on the disabled list indefinitely with the recurrence of his quad problem.
