Reds Injury Update: Brandon Phillips, Joey Votto

By on 7/22/2014 09:00:00 AM

Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips had surgery on July 11 to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb and is expected to miss a total of six to eight weeks. It appears now, that the six-week time frame is more likely, meaning late August for his return. In addition, first baseman Joey Votto is also on schedule to return from his strained left quadriceps in time for the September stretch after receiving another round of plasma injections.

Phillips started workouts Monday, including some light throwing. He cannot catch the ball yet, but the workouts and the throwing are big steps toward his recovery.'s Mark Sheldon quoted Reds manager Bryan Price saying that Phillips is on schedule to return by the end of August. Said Price,
"He was able to throw. Obviously, he was not able to catch the ball. And he's able to do some movement with his hand a lot more comfortably. It's still on schedule but still a ways away."
Meanwhile, Votto received his second of two scheduled rounds of plasma injections to help heal his left quadriceps. According to Price, the injections are part of the process and nothing exceptional. The injections contain platelets, which help in healing along with rest and rehab. The Reds expect Votto back on the field in late August, approximately the same time as Phillips.

Even with their many injuries, the Reds have stayed above .500 and in the N.L. Central race. Entering play on July 22, the Reds are in fourth place at 51-48, but only 3.5 games behind the front-running Milwaukee Brewers, indicating a four-team fight for the division title.
