Reds Injury Update: Homer Bailey, Mat Latos, Skip Schumaker

By on 7/19/2014 01:45:00 PM

This season the injury bug has constantly attacked the Cincinnati Reds.  Almost daily a new player joins the list of the walking wounded.  According to Reds beat writer, Jon Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer, three players appear to be on the comeback trail.

Along with the return of two pitchers, Fay also reported that utility player Skip Schumaker has passed his concussion test and is awaiting the OK to return.

All of this is great news for the Reds.  The return of Mat Latos and Homer Bailey brings two key pieces back to the rotation.  In his first six starts, Latos has a 2-1 record with a spectacular 2.79 ERA.  While Bailey has struggled to build off of last year's special season, he has still gone 8-5 and seen an ever improving ERA as well.

By returning Schumaker, the Reds now have another viable option to start at second base with the absence of All-Star Brandon Philips.  As a ten year veteran, Schumaker has a steady .287 batting average through his first 47 games this season.
