Reds Injury Update: Mat Latos exits with back spasms

Reds right hander Mat Latos left Friday night's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates after the fifth inning with lower back spasms, reports Manny Randhawa of Latos appeared in some discomfort several times during the game, in which he allowed two homers (four runs altogether). three hits and two walks. He was relieved by Carlos Contreras, with the Reds eventually winning 6-5.

Latos began the season on the DL recovering from left knee (miniscus) surgery he underwent in Februrary 2014.  He was activated June 14, and was 2-1 with a 2.41 ERA (ERA+ 154) in six starts prior to Friday.

Latos, 26, gave the Reds two very good seasons in 2012-13 with  total of 65 starts (420 innings), going 28-11 with a 3.32 ERA and 372 strikeouts, drawing Cy Young votes in 2012. He was also a workhorse for the San Diego Padres, who drafted him in 2006 (11th round), and traded him in December 2011 to the Reds for Yonder AlonsoBrad BoxbergerYasmani Grandal and Edinson Volquez. Latos is in his second year of arbitration ($7.25 million) and under team control through 2015.
