The second place Kansas City Royals (48-46) are hoping their best hitter, left fielder Alex Gordon, can avoid a DL stint. A 2014 All-Star selection, Gordon sprained his right wrist on July 9 and has not appeared in a game since. According to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star, Gordon will join the team in Boston for the first series after the break. The left-handed batter has a line of .268/.348/.425 with nine homers and 44 RBI in 88 games.

Gordon, 30, is in his eighth season with the Royals, posting a .269/.345/.435 career line with two All-Star selections and two Gold Gloves to his name. He was the Royals first-round draft pick (2nd overall) in 2005 and made his debut April 2, 2007. After recording his best season in 2011, Gordon signed a four-year $37.5 million contract that takes him through 2015 with a 2016 team option
