Royals Injury Update: Jason Vargas, Eric Hosmer

By on 7/30/2014 11:30:00 AM

The Kansas City Royals lost to the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday by the score of 2-1. The loss dropped the Royals to 53-52, five games behind the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central. Eric Hosmer drove in the only run for the Royals with an RBI single in the ninth inning. Hosmer has been dealing with a hand injury and only started one of the previous seven games. In other injury news, Jason Vargas has improved in his recovery from an appendectomy.

Our own Evan Petzold reported on July 25 that Vargas continued to improve in his recovery from an appendectomy that landed the pitcher on the disabled list.  Hosmer, who has been dealing with a bruised hand, was out of the lineup the past two games.

An update, as reported by Dick Kaegel of, is that Vargas might start Saturday's game against the Oakland A's.  Vargas, out since July 9, threw the equivalent of four innings in a simulated game on Tuesday.

Manager Ned Yost was pleased in what he saw from Vargas.
"He threw four innings, 15 pitches each inning. He had much more life on his pitches, much better command on his pitches, so he looked really good."
Whether or not Vargas will be ready by Saturday, is unknown.
"We'll see. I don't know,. We'll see how he feels tomorrow. If he feels good tomorrow and feels good the next day, I'd say he's really, really close to going back in."
As for Hosmer, he had been unable to properly grip a bad due to a bruised hand he suffered when being hit by a pitch against the Red Sox on July 20. Hosmer was swinging a hot bat this month before the injury, going 25-for-61 for a .410 batting average.
