Aoki was placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 21 with a strained groin. He had been bothered by the injury for some time before finally being shelved.

Following two strong seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, Aoki was supposed to fill the leadoff void for the Royals, but has struggled in 2014. Aoki has a .263/.326/.324 line with seven stolen bases in 68 games this year. Reliever Will Smith, the player Aoki was traded for, is having an All-Star caliber season, only paining the Royals further.

Even before the groin injury, Aoki was losing some playing time to Jarrod Dyson. Raul Ibanez is also in the fold now and Lorenzo Cain has done well in the leadoff spot, meaning Aoki’s role with the team moving forward is uncertain.
